Bloomingdale has Big Bear, but Anacostia will soon have Big Chair - Coffee, that is. The neighborhood's newest and only coffee shop at 2122 MLK Ave will open in the next 2 months, according to construction crews inside. The colorful and eclectic spot will be the new home of Murky Capitol Hill's equipment and is really starting to come together.
tick, tock ... countdown to a cooler (and caffeinated) hood starts now
upstairs will be a lounge / seating area
downstairs there will be a large bar, additional seating, and access to the side-alley seating
Big Chair Coffee is set to bring a new vibe to MLK Ave, and will (I think..?) be the first coffee shop in River East (starbucks in the safeway doesn't count). Woot woooot!

This looks awesome!!
Very cool! And no Starbucks doesn't count! haha
Please let it be open Saturday/Sundays....what a way to get the strip going, with a little weekend action. Maybe some evening hours too. Too much to ask? but wouldn't you love to be able to run down the street and grab a cup of joe on a Thursday at 8pm?
This is great! Having a local coffee place is great too, although I would also welcome a solo Starbucks. BTW, I wonder how the Starbucks in Safeway is doing?
Will this place serve alcohol and smores, sort of like Cosi's?
I'm so excited! Hopefully there will be more cool business to come. I want to spend my dollars in the River East community!
The SilverBack African Yard Apes have once again destroyed a community that they have migrated into. History has shown that they always do this to a neighborhood,so what can be doen to these animals, they are animals you see-drinkin- humpin- murderin and drugging. They have to be caged that is the only way. Congress Heights was a wonderful neighborhood till they trashed it -the goddamn low life sub human race
Big Chair Coffee is going to have its work cut out for it. There's already resentment for it, and there will likely be some very territorial personalities, for whom mediocrity is a RELIGION, looking to mess it up a little, if only to prove that River East can't have cafes or anything else nice. Trust me--there's already a cabal of panhandlers, criminal scum and obnoxious SOBs, who can't wait to make an 'impression' on the coffeehouse crowd.
Pray for this little shop, my friends. If it's not going to end up like the Hyland Theatre, it's going to need all the prayers it can get.
I'm thinking positively with this, and hoping that many other great shops open up, as well.
OHHHHHHHH... hopefully it will have wireless internet and we can all blog together while sipping coffee.
I'm going to forget what the locals did to the Hyland Theatre, The Penn AND Coral Hill (for now) and attempt OPTIMISM, here. I'm from Penn Branch, so give me a minute on that 'optimism' part.
Love the idea of a coffee shop! I only wish our end of MLK would move a bit faster in fixing up our business district and encouraging new and much needed businesses like this.
Finally a non-instant coffee option in that strip. And with Murky's old gear? Sign me up!
Great...I don't drink Coffee, but hey I just might start. You have to start somewhere..I'll spend my ends in there on something..
GREAT! WE NEED MORE!!
My husband and I stopped at Big Chair Coffee on Monday while traveling north to our home in NJ. It was totally serendipitous, and we were delighted with Lia and the whole place! We wish this lovely family the very best in their venture!
