Yesterday's Turkey Giveaway

Yesterday morning the new Industrial Bank teamed up with DaVita and the American Kidney Fund to pass out over 200 turkeys to people who stood in line to get one.

I don't know why, but my first instinct was to feel kinda bitter about yet another charitable "we're so great because we're doing something in Anacostia" event. But people need turkeys, and someone was nice enough to give them away. This is a Good thing. Simple as that.

Sometimes it's easy to brush away the reality that despite all the positive changes around here and the big plans for everything that there's still a significant low-income population over here. Here's to a better attitude.

Just remember we have left the era of whats in it for me and now are in the era of whats in it for us, more than enough to go around in this world, if folks need some help/turkey it is in our best interest to help provide the support.

I totally agree with you - which is why I didn't cover today's Turkey giveway in Congress Heights. Perhaps if our councilmember was more committed to actaully raising the economic standards in our community so that there would be more jobs here less people would need a free turkey. Ward 8 is more than a once (or twice) a year photo opportunity. People need to stop selling themselves so short but if someone got a free turkey today and they really needed it good for them but I dont feel the need to advertise it - we should expect that and then more from our councilmember. Perhaps is there werent all these fake non profits wasting goverment money by not getting rescources to the people so many folks wouldnt be in such a bind. People need to eat all year round not just on Thanksgiving.

More so, people need help. The economy affects people more in places like Ward 8. For every one or two who freeload, there are so many more who truly need the assistance.

When I heard about this "give away" it made me think of the quote: "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime"

Exactly!

Good point about the problem. Low income communities like Anacostia are often easy prey for feel good P.R.

I say the new folks need to mobilize and look for local grassroots alternatives for our current residents instead of waiting for big businesses to patronize us with turkeys...Symbolic?
