FiOS coming to Historic Anacostia

not that this is the end all, be all of awesomeness, but last night the DC Council approved legislation to bring Verizon FiOS to the entire city over the next nine years.

Nine years?!

OK, here's the good part: a select few neighborhoods will begin getting the fiber optic cable television and internet services by the end of 2009, including Barry Farm, Fort Stanton, and Historic Anacostia.

I am a verizon fios tech and have been working in MoCo/PGco for the last three years. All DC techs are currently being sent to fios training in anticipation of the DC layout. It's no conincidence that Verizon plans to initially deploy fios in three areas that are currently served by these existing central offices: 1.SOUTHEAST CO located at 14th/good hope SE feeds poplar point,Barry farms, St Eves west/east, MLK ave from Good Hope to St Eves, bowling AFB, anacostia subway and surrounding neighborhoods 2. SOUTHWEST CO located at south cap st/I395 feeds southwest waterfront, waterside mall, buzzard point, baseball stadium area, the entire development map on JDLand.com and surrounding areas 3. WOODLEY CO located connecticut ave NW feeds everything between connecticut ave and western ave. These three were strategically chosen because the areas served by the SOUTHEAST & SOUTHWEST COs are slated for thousands if not tens of thousands of new houses and verizon is not in the business of running copper to new developments. The WOODLEY CO was chosen because, well, verizon aint stupid. Sad to say the G'town, Dupont, Cap Hill will probably be last because verizon doesnt want to catch a $50mill lawsuit for destroying the serenity of the local population while increasing carbon emissions due to non use of green constuction equipment and organic fiber-optics. Sorry! One thing I can say is it wont take nine years. We've got a whole lot better in deploying this stuff and by the time we get to DC it wont take us long at all. Trust me, we are trying to put comcast out of business sooner rather than later. And thats straight from the horse's mouth!

Thanks for the 'horses mouth' update!

I'm so glad that we are finally at the top of the list for something new, rather than the bottom.

Historic Preservation will be cracking down on satellites on the front of houses, which makes the Verizon bundle a bit of a harder sell.
I struggled to get a technician out to move my dish and had already paid the $50 fee for it when he told me over the phone that I would need a $100 flat roof bracket. Because I was required to move it right away for the preservation grant, it was easier and cheaper to just switch to cable. I went with RCN for the price, but I'm really missing a lot of the features that I had with Directv and Comcast in the past.
